MCJ 102 – A foundation molding the future

This year I have been more challenged than ever before academically. I entered Mass Communication Journalism 102 thinking it was going to be extremely easy. I remember being completely baffled when I received a B on my first writing assignment for the class. I quickly learned that writing as a journalist is the hardest thing I have ever tried to master. As upset and frustrated I became every time I saw my papers after they were graded, I am truly thankful for every critique and correction. This class has been hard. It tested me as a writer, a creator, and a person. Without my professor’s persistent push, I would not have grown as journalist. Print news drove and still drives me insane, but I understand that it’s traditional writing teaches the fundamentals of journalism. My favorite writing has been Public Relations. Press releases were fun to write. I was able to take what I learned in the classroom and apply it to my work at my job. This class has been one of the best learning experiences I have ever had. I know I can only improve from here.

Newks

Newks is a restaurant that goes above the call of service to take care of their customer. I love soup and salad. Because of Newks’ diversity and creativity, I can choose from five different soups each day and multiple different salad options fixed to my liking.

Tea is an essential part of any southern meal. Not only does Newks offer sweet and unsweet tea, but it also offers Newk’s Splenda sweetened tea made just for the health nuts watching their caloric intake.

Newks continues to impress across the nation as it stays true to it’s quick service, great atmosphere, and welcoming environment. As soon as I walk through the door I am helped. Newks gives the five star dining experience with a just a soup and salad.

The Real Scandal of Scandal

Scandal has been on the air for five seasons, each leaving you wanting more. Olivia and Fitz finally get to be together. It’s not their Vermont, but they are together. Mellie is out of that big ole’ White House. Elizabeth North is the babysitter for the Vice President. And the great Cyrus Beene is chief of staff, in his rightful place. Does this sound like the fairy tale all of the faithful gladiators have been looking for? Why of course not.

Gladiators thrive on the scandal of Scandal. As we fall in love over and over again with the handsome, dreamy Jake Ballard, we become even more connected to the scandal within a scandal. Let’s face it. Who needs the married president of the United States when you can have a trained killer. He’s handsome and loving, with a crazy side: your modern day prince charming.

The true scandal of Scandal is we cannot get enough of the love triangles, back stabbing, and plotting against and among our favorite characters. How will we ever get closure? Will the story end with Fitz and Olivia living happily ever after? Well then we wouldn’t be entertained without the scandal, would we? So it is my personal opinion the directors of the show will kill Fitz in a presidential assassination so Jake and Olivia can be together, as God intended.

Public Relations & Advertising

Public Relations has a special place in my heart because it’s my major, and because it is an interesting form of reaching the masses. For this part of journalism, the role flips. You are no longer writing for just the public. You write for the media to read and critique. It is the Public Relation Practitioner’s job to represent their organization well enough for the media to be convinced. PR is urgent. It is prompt. It is to the point with emphasis on main points. Public relations must deliver without fail.

Similarly, advertising is a convincing action. You must know your product like public relations requires you to understand the organization you represent. Advertising and public relations go hand in hand because part of Public Relations is advertising. In order to be able to advertise well, you must have excellent PR skills.

Advertising impacts our culture, our economy and the way we think. Being able to communicate for advertising is best given by a skilled Public Relations thinker.

Broadcast News Vs. Print News

Broadcast news is different from print news because broadcast is a performance. Writing the script for broadcast is only half of the battle. The dramatic pauses and inflection in the voice while on the air it was truly gives broadcast journalism it’s soul. Broadcast journalism is a practice just as much as it is journalism.

Early print news writers created the Bible of journalism. Its gives you the basic information of how to write as a journalist, and it also allows you to take that back bone of writing and make it your own when writing for social media.  Newspapers give people multiple different platforms to choose from how they read print news in order to even survive. Many newspapers, such as the Washington Post or the Wall Street journal offer readers online subscriptions to encourage people to read the news.

I prefer broadcast over print because I enjoy the performance. It is also easier to write because I can imagine how the reporter should be saying the script as I write it.

Communication for Journalists- A challenge?

Communication is difficult for journalists because traditional print news is not what the average scanner is reading. Traditional print news is the foundation of writing for the masses. Today, news articles are available on line. Many people get majority of their news from the lead sentence of an online article. I check the news on twitter after following CNN Breaking News and other news sources such as the Wall Street Journal and NBC.

There is no use in trying to change society to go back to the traditional print style news. It isn’t going to happen. As journalists, the creative souls must cater to the public. After all, we want to get the news out to the masses. It is our responsibility to reach the people.

“I am deeply interested in the progress and elevation of journalism, having spent my life in that profession, regarding it as a noble profession and one of unequaled importance for its influence upon the minds and morals of the people.” –Joseph Pulitzer.

Communication for Journalists- A challenge?

Twitter- the new frontier

In a world dominated by social media, new and innovative technology and busy work-a-holics, what better way to get information out better than a social media site requiring no more than 140 characters per post.

Twitter is much better than Facebook because no one wants to read a novel to find out what is happening in the world.  I’m an involved, full time college student with a job and homework. I do not have time to endure your lengthy essay about current events- which may or not be relevant.

Example A- Your relationship status on Facebook, otherwise known as your proclamation to the world you finally are in a relationship which may last 3 months, is irrelevant to me.

Example B- Your 140 character tweet or retweet that showed up on my twitter feed is actually more beneficial than a detailed play-by-play of your entire day.

Facebook can be beneficial, but it is becoming outdated because it does not cater the needs of the average person. Communication is key in our society. Twitter is the new frontier because it gives integrity to journalism- straight to the point.
